What are measuring wheels?

Measuring wheels – also known as length measuring wheels, encoder wheels or encoder measuring wheels – are technical products from the field of measurement technology. Measuring wheels can be used to reliably measure lengths, distances or speeds, thereby enabling the precise recording of movements of materials or machines.

In practice, our measuring wheels are considered encoder accessories. They are often used in conjunction with sensors, encoders or other measuring tools.

Functionality

How do measuring wheels work?

As the measuring wheel rolls on the surface of the material being measured, its rotational movement is transmitted to the encoder (also known as a rotary encoder) via a shaft.

This can convert and display the distance travelled by the measuring wheel based on the impulses. It is important to ensure the correct contact pressure to prevent slippage and to use the appropriate wheel surface for the area to be measured.

What materials are measuring wheels made of?

The base body of a measuring wheel is usually made of aluminium or steel. The running surface of the measuring wheel, which comes into direct contact with the surface of the material being measured, can be smooth, knobbly, cross-knurled or grooved – depending on the area of application, the material properties of the material being measured and the accuracy requirements. An O-ring is just as possible as a vulcanised or bonded coating.

For more demanding applications, such as in the food industry, measuring wheels with anodized surfaces and FDA-compliant plastics are usually used, which meet the high hygiene and safety standards.

At abp, we are happy to advise you on which material is best suited to your specific requirements. Contact us for customized solutions!

For which applications are abp measuring wheels suitable?

The measuring wheels from abp can be used for the distance measurement of a wide variety of materials, such as cardboard, greased and non-greased metals, textiles, wood, steel profiles, carpets, cables, painted surfaces, non-woven fabrics, leather and more.

Different factors such as temperature and contact pressure must be taken into account in order to select the right surface covering for your application.

We will be happy to assist you in selecting the optimum measuring wheel for your application!

Selection

What should you look for when choosing a measuring wheel?

To ensure that the results remain accurate, the wheel must be applied with even pressure. This ensures that the measuring wheel is in constant contact with the material being measured and rolls without slipping. This is usually achieved by means of a spring arm or other mounting device.

The tread of the measuring wheel also influences the quality of the results: it ensures that the measuring wheel rolls evenly and reliably on the surface – depending on the material, texture or direction of movement of the measured material. For example, a knobbly or ribbed tread can increase adhesion, while a smooth tread causes less friction.

In order to meet the diverse requirements of different applications, we at abp offer various tread designs. These are specially tailored to the respective conditions and requirements. Feel free to contact us for a no-obligation consultation!

What alternatives to measuring wheels are there?

Optical encoders use light sources to measure movement and offer contactless measurement. They are particularly advantageous when it comes to avoiding wear or when high resolutions are required.

Inductive sensors measure movement without direct contact and are particularly useful when high temperatures or magnetic fields are present.

Laser or ultrasonic distance measurement systems are ideal for applications that require contactless measurements over longer distances, such as distance measurement or height measurement.

Probe systems or micrometers offer very precise measurement of thicknesses and distances, but are less suitable for dynamic measurements as they require direct contact.

Each of these alternatives offers specific advantages. However, measuring wheels remain the preferred choice in many areas due to their versatility, cost, and applicability, especially for dynamic measurements and integration into rotary encoder systems.

What advantages do measuring wheels offer over other measuring tools?

Precise accuracy: Measuring wheels enable highly accurate measurement of lengths, speeds, and positions. They deliver highly accurate results, even in complex applications where other measuring methods sometimes struggle.

Robustness and durability: Thanks to precise manufacturing and high-quality materials, measuring wheels offer a long service life and reliable performance over long periods of time. They are particularly resistant to mechanical stress, which is why they can be used even in harsh industrial environments.

Versatile surfaces: Measuring wheels are available in various surface variants, e.g. with cross knurling, smooth, ribbed or studded. This variety ensures that they can be optimally adapted to different materials and application conditions.

Easy integration: Measuring wheels can be easily mounted on shafts and connected to encoders or sensors, making integration into existing systems particularly easy.

What are hygienic measuring wheels?

The Hygienic measuring wheels series was specially developed for applications in sensitive environments, such as those found in the food and chemical industries. Thanks to the FDA-compliant plastic and the anodized surface the measuring wheels meet the highest hygiene requirements while offering precise and reliable measuring solutions.

A typical area of application for the hygienic measuring wheels is precise speed and length measurement in conveyor systems within a food production line. Here, for example, they are used to check packaging film lengths or for the exact positioning of products.

In which industries are abp measuring wheels used?

The company abp Antriebstechnik is known worldwide as a manufacturer of encoder measuring wheels—including custom solutions! Wherever precise length and speed measurements are required, measuring wheels from abp play a crucial role.

Measuring wheels from abp are used in the following industries, for example:

  • Food industry: In the food industry, measuring wheels ensure that packaging and cutting processes are precisely controlled. For example, to measure the length of films, labels or packaging materials or to ensure exact cuts or positioning.
  • Automation as well as plant and mechanical engineering: Measuring wheels in conjunction with a rotary encoder detect linear movements by rolling on a surface and convert these into speed or position values. They do not require a reference point and can be used flexibly for length, speed or position measurements.
  • Warehouse and conveyor technology: In conveyor technology, measuring wheels are essential for precisely recording the movement of conveyor systems. They convert linear movements into speed or position data and thus ensure the smooth, controlled transportation of goods.
  • Packaging industry: In the packaging industry, measuring wheels are essential for the precise control of packaging lines, as they accurately monitor product transportation. The measuring wheels from abp are particularly suitable for the reliable measurement of belt speeds.

Manufacture

What makes abp measuring wheels special?

The precision and durability of abp measuring wheels are decisively influenced by the following factors:

  1. Concentricity: We attach great importance to precise concentricity without fluctuations and irregularities. As a result, you benefit from absolutely accurate measurement results. Even at high speeds, our solution guarantees slip-free and reliable measurement.
  2. Material: We use lead-free aluminum as standard, which meets the highest requirements. We also offer special solutions made of alternative materials such as stainless steel or with anodized surfaces – individually adapted to your requirements.
  3. Surface properties: The wheel coating of the measuring wheels plays a key role in adhesion to different surfaces. The measuring wheels from abp Antriebstechnik are available with different coatings for optimum grip and high resistance to lubricants, environmental influences and other external factors. Possible coatings for abp measuring wheels are: cross-knurled, smooth, studded, ribbed or with O-ring.
The innovative manufacturing process from abp Antriebstechnik means that the coating can be applied to the measuring wheel without any joints or adhesive spots on the coating.

How are measuring wheels with spring arms mounted?

  1. Preparing the parts: Ensure that you have all the necessary parts to hand: the measuring wheel, the shaft, the spring arm, and the fasteners (e.g., screws, brackets).
  2. Mounting the measuring wheel on the shaft: Ensure that the surface of the shaft is clean and free of contaminants to ensure precise mounting of the measuring wheel. Then place the measuring wheel on the shaft and secure it with a retaining device (e.g., a screw, retaining ring, or keyway) to prevent it from slipping. Ensure that the measuring wheel can rotate freely and without resistance, without moving too much.
  3. Mounting the spring arm: Attach the spring arm to the designated bracket or support rail in the measuring system. The spring arm should be positioned so that the mounted measuring wheel runs over the measured material in the optimal position. Ensure that the spring arm is aligned parallel to the axis of rotation of the measuring wheel to ensure even force distribution.
  4. Adjusting the contact pressure: Adjust the spring arm so that the contact pressure is set according to the application and the material of the measured goods. The pressure must be high enough to prevent slippage. But be careful: excessive contact pressure leads to excessive wear on the measuring wheel. The spring arm is factory-set to a contact pressure of 15Nm.
  5. Checking the assembly: Turn the measuring wheel manually to ensure that it rolls evenly and does not exhibit any vibrations or irregularities. Also check whether the contact pressure remains constant and the measuring accuracy is guaranteed by means of manual tests or a distance measurement. Then test whether the measuring wheel contact remains stable under load without slippage or excessive friction. Then perform a test run with the entire measuring system.
  6. Continuous inspection: Regularly check the condition of the measuring wheel and spring arm for possible loosening and wear. If necessary, the contact pressure should be adjusted to obtain perfect measurement results.
